Online Community
The online community plays an important part of life at Warwick. Every study bedroom has access to high speed broadband. There is increasing access to wireless internet across the University. Off-campus, many students also choose to install broadband networks in their house. Academic departments are encouraging online forum discussion to supplement seminar time, and at the heart of Warwick’s virtual student community is the Warwick Blog system.
Warwick Blogs
All members of the University are offered a free, individualised blog space. Over 7,000 staff and students already have one, and that number is rising on a daily basis.
Warwick Blogs are easy to create and maintain. They have many benefits: aside from advancing your IT and writing skills, they encourage students to use this service to voice and explore ideas. Bloggers write about anything and everything.
You can find comments on current affairs or cultural debates, personal experiences, travel logs, academic work, and even on food, drink and comedy. There is also space to upload photographs and images – interaction is key to this project. Readers can comment on entries, making the space more conversational. With over 151,978 blog entries so far and 213,592 comments on them, students and staff are constantly building on each others’ ideas.
These blogs have been known to help in a number of ways, from developing thesis proposals to advising travellers of the best unknown destinations across the globe. Blogs are great for keeping in touch with friends and family, for meeting new people, or for working on team projects, and have provided a new route for the continuous exchange of knowledge between staff and students at Warwick University.
The social life arising from this initiative is thriving, with regular blog socials. Students are able to meet people they may not ordinarily come across in their lectures or societies.
Warwick Graduates’ Association
You don't have to lose your blog when you leave Warwick, either. If you join the Warwick Graduates' Association they ensure continued contact with this online community. Past students can easily keep in touch with their friends and the University. This ongoing access means that Warwick Blogs are becoming a worldwide community of Warwick alumni, staff and students, keeping in touch and sharing ideas, experiences and opportunities, creating a rich web of information and contacts.
We’ve covered just about all of Warwick University campus… but what about Beyond the Campus.
