Energy, Water & Carbon

The University of Warwick remains committed to its long-established drive to manage energy consumption. However, the continued success and expansion of the University creates a considerable challenge. It is incumbent on all of us to use energy as efficiently as possible. On these pages you will find further details about how we are attempting to reduce our energy consumption and what you can do to help.

2020 Strategy and Carbon Management Implementation Plan

The University used Climate Week (21-27 March 2011) to officially launch its 2020 carbon reduction strategy. This establishes the carbon reduction roadmap to meet our declared target of 34% reduction in carbon emissions (against a 1990 baseline) by 2020. This constitutes a massive undertaking and will require the co-operation of all members of the University community.

A 34% reduction in carbon emissions against 1990 levels equates to a massive 60% reduction against current levels (2009-10).

Our commitment to energy conservation is manifest in:
  • We were involved in the first tranche of the Higher Education Carbon Management Programme.
  • We have completed energy audits of the main campus since the early 1980s.
  • We are developing an automated remote monitoring system to monitor consumptions and target energy waste.
  • We make extensive use of Combined Heat & Power to generate our own power and district heating along with the new upgrade of Thermal Stores.
  • We employ dedicated staff who are committed to reducing the impact of energy use.
  • We utilise a sophisticated Building Management System that is constantly monitored and tuned by specialist staff.

Energy Monitor Loan Scheme
  • Want to understand your electricity usage better?
  • Want to know how much energy a particular appliance is using at anytime?
  • Want to know how much your electricity use is costing you?
All staff and students are able to borrow a plug-in energy monitor for their personal use at work and at home. Simply complete the online form detailing when you would like to borrow the monitor and for how long (max. 1 month) and it will be delivered to your place of work.

Come On .... If you don't do it, you might never know how much energy you're wasting!

"Most global environmental degradation is caused by a small minority of the world's population - the 20 per cent of mainly Western people who consume 80 per cent of the world's resources. The planet cannot sustain current total levels of consumption, let alone 5 billion people, or almost 10 billion within 60 years, consuming as Westerners do now."
