The University of Warwick is committed to the principles of sustainability. The University recognises that its activities impact upon the environment through its routine internal operations, its infrastructural development and its influence on the wider community. The University acknowledges a responsibility for, and a commitment to, the protection of the environment at all levels. The University will endeavour to exceed the requirements of relevant environmental legislation and has set the following targets to drive environmental performance improvement:
The University environmental targets are reviewed on an annual basis by the Environment & Amenities' Committee. The most recent review took place in October 2011.
Awareness
- To run at least one high profile awareness-raising campaign during each academic year
- Provide annual support and assistance to a student-led environmental action week
Procurement
- To introduce a system to audit key suppliers with respect to their environmental management practices
Raw Materials & Energy Use
- 34% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2020 (cf 1990 levels)
- Target BREEAM “Excellent” standard for all new university buildings
- To achieve a 2% rolling reduction in absolute water consumption per annum
Waste & Recycling
- To reduce waste to landfill to 5% of total "waste" produced by end 2012/13
- For the University recycling rate* to exceed 50% by end 2012/13
* operational waste, rather than construction waste
Green Transport
- Introduce at least one high profile environmentally-friendly transport initiative per annum
Biodiversity
- Publication of an overarching Biodiversity Strategy for the main campus by July 2012
- Develop a minimum of two management plans per annum for identified areas of biodiversity value across the University
