A snapshot of 1965

In this year at Warwick:

The University’s first Vice-Chancellor, Jack Butterworth had been in post for two years at this point.
After Jack Butterworth hand-picked ten Founding Professors, the first undergraduate and postgraduate students were admitted in 1965.
The University started with a group of buildings including space for academic departments, two lecture theatres, a restaurant, a common room and the Library which had already acquired around 45,000 books.
In the first year, Warwick offered 18 UG degree courses.
Having been given approval by the government in 1961, the University received its Royal Charter of Incorporation in 1965.

Warwick's art collection began with the gift of several important abstract paintings of which Orange and Lemon with Whites, by Patrick Heron, is one. Patrick Heron worked in St Ives, making large scale, brilliantly coloured abstract paintings that retain a sense of natural forms. Orange and Lemon with Whites is particularly significant since it shows the artist’s working methods. Pencil marks can be seen beneath the paint and show how the artist planned these deceptively simple forms to create a balanced composition using just three colours. This painting was originally installed at the entrance to the Library and can now be found near the back staircase in University House.
