Professor Robert Patten

Bob PattenProfessor Robert Patten is the Charles Dickens Museum’s current Scholar in Residence. Professor Patten is Lynette S. Autrey Professor in Humanities at Rice University, Texas and has over fifty years of experience studying and teaching the Victorian period. He has previously taught courses in 19th Century British literature and art, the European novel, and the history of the book.

He is the author of Charles Dickens and His Publishers and George Cruikshank’s Life, Times and Art. The latter book was chosen by The Guardian as best biography of the decade.

Professor Patten served as Editor of SEL Studies in English Literature 1500 – 1900 and was president of the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing from 2005-2009.
