Am I eligible for a place on the MA course?
You are if you hold at least an upper second class honours degree in art history or an equivalent humanities subject. If your background is in art practice or a non-humanities subject you may wish to consider our Postgraduate Diploma course which is designed to provide a platform for postgraduate study in art history.
Do I need an English Language Qualification?
If your first language is not English you will be expected to obtain one of the following recognised English language qualifications:
- IELTS of at least 7.0
- TOEFL of at least 620 (paper based) or 260 (computer based)
- WELT score of BBB
If you do not achieve one of the above scores please send in your certificate anyway. In such cases the University may recommend that you re-take the test or that you attend a pre-sessional English course provided by the University.
Do I need Italian to do the Venice stream?
In order to get the most out of the Venice course, a working knowledge of Italian is not essential, but it is desirable. Students who speak and read Italian will have an advantage. It is recommended that students without Italian who are accepted onto the Venice course undergo a language course during the Summer.
Can I study part-time?
Yes. With the part-time mode of study you complete the course in two years.
On the Venice stream in the first year, you take the Venice term in the Autumn term, and we usually ask you to take the core Methods in Art History module in the spring of your first year. We ask this as we believe its good for students to receive a methodological framework for their studies in their first years, but there is some flexiblity depending on individual circumstances. In your second year, you take your final option course in the Spring term, and then complete your dissertation over the summer, submitting it in September.
On the British stream in the first year, you take the year long British Art and its Histories module, and will begin research for your dissertation over the summer. In the second year the Autumn module and the core Methods in Art History module, taught in the spring, are studied and the dissertaion is completed for submission in September
Alternative patterns can be arranged according to module availability.
If you are an overseas student from outside the EU planning to part-time, you will need to check the conditions of your visa, for more information, go to the website of the University's Academic Office
.
