History of Art Research
70% of the Department's research was graded 3* or 4* in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. All members of the Department publish regularly with leading presses and in international journals.
The Department has three main research strands: Art in Northern Italy, British Art and Aesthetics. New appointments have been made to reinforce specialist expertise in these areas, which are reflected in research-led MA teaching.
Although staff work across a wide variety of fields, from late Medieval to contemporary art, they are united by the shared conviction that research is most rewarding when implemented within a live context (exhibitions, symposia, conferences, criticism).
Recently completed research projects include a four-year AHRC funded project into the Life and Work of Sir Basil Spence.
The Department welcomes applications to research degrees in areas that relate to the research interests of individual staff.
