About the Department of Classics and Ancient History

Welcome to the Department of Classics and Ancient History. These web pages provide details for anyone who would like to find out more about our degree courses, staff, and research, as well as practical information for prospective applicants and our current students.

The Classics Department at Warwick is one of the best in the UK. Its international reputation rests on its innovative and intensive teaching and on research which continues to open up new aspects of Greco-Roman antiquity and its importance in later history. The University has recognised the former in awarding the Butterworth Memorial Teaching Award to two members of the department in 2004 (Alison Cooley) and in 2006 (Zahra Newby), and Warwick Teaching Awards to Clare Rowan and Michael Scott. At the same time there is an emphasis on traditional skills: all our degree programmes enable students to begin an ancient language, or to advance their knowledge of Latin and Greek. While a Classics degree can lead to vocational training in museum and education, the Warwick department has a lively community of students who are engaged in postgraduate research. Subjects of current doctoral theses include the Epigraphic Strategies of Martial’s Epigrams, Disability in the Ancient World, Ancient Tokens, and Inscribed Sculptures in Ancient Greece. Graduate students at Warwick have been successful in securing studentships and conference funding from the University's Humanities Research Centre as well as from the AHRC and other sources. The Department also offers a range of postgraduate bursaries.

Classical studies have always been interdisciplinary and the courses at Warwick are designed to reflect the full range of Greek and Roman culture, from religion and myth to philosophy and history, from art and architecture to poetry and drama. A degree course in a Classical subject thus provides a rich and versatile training. This enables students to develop powers of expression and analysis, preparing them for a wide range of professions, including law, business and the media.
