History of Medicine from the Ancient World to the Classical Ages of Islam

This course looks at the history of medicine in the Ancient World from roughly the seventh century BC to the seventh century AD. The module will cover the main advances in medical knowledge from the Hippocratics of the 5th/4th centuries BC, through the great Hellenistic physicians, to the medicine and medical practices of the Roman Empire. The legacy of antiquity in Islam and Byzantium will also be explored.
