It is ESSENTIAL that you read these texts BEFORE the start of each term.
In our classes, we will not be translating the texts line by line, but trouble-shooting particularly tricky passages, and commenting on things of stylistic and historical interest. Please come along to the classes having already read the texts, bringing notes on any passages you would like help in translating. Feel free to download texts from The Latin Library, but be aware that these may differ slightly from the set editions specified below:

- Suetonius Augustus; Perseus project, with linguistic help
Preparation schedule
- Read during the summer vacation, before autumn term: Horace Odes book 3
- Read over Christmas, before spring term: RGDA, Suetonius.

- Set text is A.E. Cooley Res Gestae divi Augusti (2009, CUP) historical commentary
- R.E. Wallace (Bolchazy-Carducci, 2000) contains helpful notes on grammar + vocab.
- C. Damon (Bryn Mawr Latin Commentaries 1995) helps with grammar, but has no vocab
