Research interests
Publishes on performance in its social and political contexts. His book Women as Hamlet: Performance and Interpretation in Theatre, Film and Fiction (Cambridge 2007) includes studies of the shifting relationship of Shakespeare, culture and gender in many societies and ideological situations - from nineteenth-century Britain, America and France to Weimar Germany, Stalinist Russia, and Eastern Europe during the fall of Communism. Acts of War (1996), co-edited with John Stokes, explores the representation of military conflict in postwar British stage and television drama. He edited and co-translated Tadeusz Rozewicz's selected plays: Reading The Apocalypse in Bed (1998). With Barbara Bogoczek he has translated several selections of Polish poetry, including: Ewa Lipska, Poet? Criminal? Madman? (1991), White Strawberries (2000) and Pet Shops (2002); Tadeusz Rozewicz, recycling (2001); Maria Pawlikowska, Butterflies (2000). Their translations of two major recent prose works, Ewa Lipska's Sefer and Rozewicz's Mother Departs, are being published in Canada and the UK in 2012/13. Plays, adaptations and translations performed in many London theatres. His research currently focuses on the relationship between race and Shakespeare in Britain in the 1950s and '60s, and on Shakespearean cinema. Welcomes suggestions for postgraduate research in contemporary drama and performance history.
He is Principal Investigator for Multicultural Shakespeare, a major AHRC-funded project to record the contribution of Black and Asian artists to the development of Shakespearean performance in the UK: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/english/research/currentprojects/multiculturalshakespeare/
As a playwright his work includes A Short Sharp Shock with Howard Brenton (Royal Court/ Stratford East) and the drama-documentary 'I Have Done the State Some Service': Robeson, Othello and the FBI.
