Research degrees

PhD in English and Comparative English Studies

The PhD is three to four years full-time or five years part-time, and leads to a dissertation of 80,000 words. You should hold (or be about to complete) an MA or equivalent before applying.

PhD in Translation Studies

The PhD is three to four years full-time or five years part-time, and leads to a dissertation of 80,000 words. You should hold (or be about to complete) an MA or equivalent before applying. We recommend you contact Dr Chantal Wright to discuss your research plans before starting your application.

MPhil in English and Comparative Literary Studies

The MPhil is two to three years full-time leading to a 65,000 word dissertation. You should normally hold (or be about to complete) an MA or equivalent before applying, although applicants with good first degrees will be considered. We recommend you contact the Director of Graduate Studies before starting your application.

MA by Research in English and Comparative Literary Studies

The MA by Research is one year full-time leading to a 40,000 word dissertation. This is a discrete piece of research, prepared by a student with prior MA level research training, working independently under supervision. If you wish to apply for this degree you will need to give reasons why you wish to take the MA by Research, rather than a taught MA programme.

Please note that for most students, including those who plan to go on to PhD study, the taught MA is the appropriate route (not the MA by Research). We recommend you contact the Director of Graduate Studies to discuss your plans before starting your application.
