The MA in Translation and Transcultural Studies (MA in TTS) will study the theory of translation enhanced by a strong element of literary translation and the study of literatures across cultures and languages. Rather than focussing on specific language pairs, this MA will explore translation as a literary and cultural phenomenon and study how literatures cross borders through translation.

Students will be able to work alongside the significant numbers of members of staff in the English Department who have experience of literary translation, including through distinguished published work. They will also have the opportunity to follow modules relating to translation and literature offered within the Faculty of Arts e.g by the departments of French, German and Italian. The MA in TTS will encourage a wide-ranging approach to literatures, languages, and cultures. It will be possible to work independently on texts in, for example, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, French, German, Latin, Japanese, and Turkish.

Students will follow a combination of required and optional modules, and write a dissertation of 20,000 words. The course can be pursued as follows:

Term 1: Translation Studies in Theory and Practice (Core Module)

Term 2: Literary Translation and Creative (Re)Writing in a Global Context (Core Module) OR Crossing Borders: Writing, Language and Cultural Transfer (Core Module)

Students will choose their Term 2 Core Module on the basis of the dissertation they wish to undertake, which can be either a piece of extended literary translation (an extract from a novel, a group of short stories, or a collection of poems), with introduction and commentary; OR an extended study of a topic in literary translation (e.g., the work of a particular translator, the translations of a particular author, or the role of translations in a given literary culture or period).

This MA will offer students a firm grounding in the theory and history of translation, while also exploring literary translation from a transcultural perspective. The option to engage actively with literary translation among scholars of a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds makes this course stand out from MAs that focus on interpreting only.
