The AHRC Landscapes of Secrecy project at Warwick and Nottingham was recently chosen as a case study in an RCUK report on how to generate research impact. This panel attempts to give a quick and dirty guide to the lessons learned.

Professor Philip Cowley, University of Nottingham

Philip Cowley is Britain’s top expert on Parliament and will talk about developing a parliamentary audience for your research. Parliament is a labyrinthine institution with nmumerous select committees, cross paliamenty groups and semainrs that are all hungry for new spealkers offering new audiences for your research. Philip Cowley will tell you how to do this.

Peter Dunn will talk about the commanding heights of the media. How to access TV, radio and Broadsheet newspapers. For those who are interested there will be opportunities to sign up for a specialist half-day course in TV and radio work.

It is a pleasure to announce that for the next and last session of the Latin American Reading Group, which will take place TOMORROW, TUESDAY 22nd MAY at 1pm in H.302, we will have as a speaker the world's expert on Mario Vargas Llosa, Professor Efraín Kristal, Chair of Comparative Literature, UCLA.

He will be giving a paper entitled 'From Utopia to Reconciliation: Vargas Llosa's recent fiction'.

This will be an excellent prelude to the forthcoming visit to Warwick, in June, of the Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 2010.

As always, all welcome and refreshments will be provided.

STVDIO speaker, Lawrence Green (Warwick) now scheduled for Tuesday 22nd May, 5pm in the Graduate Space

Thomas Churchyard (1523?-1604) – soldier, poet, mercenary, spy, deviser of royal pageantry verses, epitaph writer, war ‘journalist’, pamphleteer and indefatigable seeker after preferment has been said to ‘typify’ the Englishman during the sixteenth century.

This was also a time when notions of ‘home’ did not embrace ideas of family, privacy, intimacy and the domestic that are taken for granted when conceptualising the word in the twenty-first century.

This paper will examine some of the ways in which Thomas Churchyard – this ‘typical’ Englishman – imagined ‘home’ during one of the most eventful eras of English history.

Tenth Warwick Symposium on Parish Research

25 –27 May 2012 (Friday evening to Sunday afternoon)

In 2012 we mark the 10th anniversary of the Parish Symposium by teaming up with the British Association for Local History and the Centre for the Study of Christianity and Culture for a weekend of parish-related research and initiatives. ‘Parish Studies Today’ will bring together individuals and groups interested in parish history, culture and heritage to showcase the great variety of work pursued in the field across Britain and Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. We offer a unique opportunity for collaboration and exchange of ideas between academic and independent researchers, preservation organizations and local communities in the comfortable surroundings of a modern conference centre.

Parallel sessions will feature a diverse range of research and project presentations, panel discussions and methodological workshops. A fair of project displays and promotional stalls will run alongside. Topics of investigation include:

· parish communities past and present

· efforts to interpret & preserve parish art, archives, architecture and material culture

· relationships between parishes, monasteries and local authorities

· digital reconstructions of period church interiors

· recent research projects conducted in Continental Europe

· poor relief and local charities

· acoustic dimensions of post-reformation parishes

· local magic and healing practices

· and much, much more

We are particularly pleased to announce four plenary lectures by leading parish scholars:

• Martin Crampin (University of Wales, Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies): ‘Discovering the Visual Culture of Welsh Parish Churches in the Modern Age’
• Prof. em. Chris Dyer (University of Leicester, Centre for English Local History): ‘Have historians been too sentimental about the village community, 1334-1540?’
• Prof. John Harper (Bangor University, School of Music): ‘Exploring the experience of worship in the late medieval parish church’
• Dr Penny Roberts (Warwick, History): ‘Conflict and Violence in the French Urban Parish in the Age of the Reformation’
