Research  

 My doctoral dissertation discussed the reception of science and technique in the French pre-Revolutionary society. I developed a cultural approach of technology, especially aeronautics. My current research deals with the issues of reception and mediation of technical public demonstrations as well as the emergence of public support to innovation in 18th century.

 Current project  

Marie Curie Grant, Intra European Fellowship C.I.T.E.K : « Commercialisation of Invention and The Economy of Knowledge, France-Britain, 18^e-19^e centuries ».

 The research project focuses on the social consequences of the spread of a "technical culture" in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. I seek to understand the ways in which the dissemination of useful knowledge depended upon lay support and participation, which was expressed, for instance, through the rise of subscriptions for technical devices and schemes. My aim is to study how the social milieu which supported innovative activity acted as a resource for improvers, inventors, and entrepreneurs in planning technological projects. The research project will range across cultural history, social history and economic history; it will also rely on comparative approaches at a European level. My methodology will thus rest on a systematic review of printed material relating to the raising of public funds for new technology, between 1700 and 1820. I will not focus on one specific technology but on different media such as prototypes, public lecture courses or construction of specific projects designed to be funded by subscriptions, lotteries and joint-stock companies, more especially in the field of mechanics (prototype, instruments) and chemistry.
