My main interests are in the study of eighteenth-century culture, French Revolution and nineteenth-century history. The first opportunity to challenge myself with these topics was on the occasion of the dissertation for my Laurea Triennale (Bachelor’s Degree equivalent), in which I investigated a series of miracles registered in Tuscany during the turmoil of Napoleon’s arrival in Italy in 1796. The significance of the catholic symbols evoked by insurgents was deciphered by looking back at the history of the same symbols along the eighteenth century.

Following the same path, on the occasion of my master européen (Master’s Degree equivalent), I decided to focus on the relations between republican culture and religious life in the Roman Republic (1798-1799). The results of this work led me to broaden the scope of research for my PhD project: a study of the characteristics of political trust and loyalty during the eighteenth century and the French Revolution. These characteristics are essential to understanding the revolutionary culture, for they involve one of the most divisive issues of that time: civic oath and the emotions it could provide. My thesis was aimed at clarifying how the experience of oaths shaped the relationship between citizens and power during the revolutionary decade (1789-1799) in France and in Italy, and how this relationship is empowered by narratives taken from religion, the culture of honour, and ideology. From a wider, transnational viewpoint, my primary goal was to provide a deeper look into this key topic of the historiography on the French Revolution.

While turning this thesis into a book, I am currently working on a new project on the characteristics of sacred and profane eloquence in the XVIIIth century.
