The Department of History has been granted one three-year doctoral scholarship by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for study beginning in 2012-13. This award could also be considered by MA applicants, for it could alternatively be a '1+3' scholarship - covering 1 year of taught MA studies, and the 3 years of the doctorate. The award covers course fees and maintenance, and is designed to allow students to undertake three years study towards a PhD (or four years, if it were to be a 1+3 scholarship). To be eligible, students need to demonstrate a residency connection with the UK. (Students from the EU, who have not been resident in the UK, may be eligible for a tuition-only award). The ESRC primarily funds research in the social sciences, but also supports work in the fields of economic and social history. Economic and social here can be defined quite broadly, and if you are in doubt as to whether your intended project falls under the remit of the ESRC, contact the Director of Graduate Studies. To be considered for this award, you should complete the application form |

The Warwick History Department is pleased to announce that the competition for the Richard and Anne Crossman Memorial Scholarship is open. Funded by a generous gift from an anonymous donor, this award will be offered to an outstanding applicant expected to matriculate in the History Department in autumn 2012. The award is open to new MPhil/PhD candidates in any field of study supported by the Department. In keeping with the Crossmans’ sustained engagement with and contribution to 20th-century British society, culture and politics, preference may be given to candidates in the field of modern British history. A distinguished Labour politician, Richard Crossman (1907-1974) served as MP for Coventry East from 1945-1974. A member of the Labour Party National Executive Committee (1952-1967), he was appointed Minister of Housing and Local Government (1964-66) by Harold Wilson and subsequently served as Leader of the House of Commons (1966-68) and Secretary of State for Heath and Social Security (1968-70). He became editor of the New Statesman in 1970, upon the Conservatives’ return to power. The Crossman Papers form a major archival collection within Warwick’s Modern Records Centre, comprising extensive correspondence, diaries, publications, press clippings and photographs. Anne Crossman (1921-2008), Richard Crossman’s third wife, read PPE at Oxford before wartime service at Bletchley Park. Founder of a craft gallery and buttery at the couple’s Oxfordshire home, she served as her husband’s literary co-executor, successfully challenging the Cabinet Office in the Courts to publish Crossman’s political diaries, and thus to open a unique window for historians onto power relations and personalities in Harold Wilson’s government. In order to be considered for this scholarship, you need to complete the application form |

For 2012-13 entry the Warwick Graduate School expects to award around 45 Chancellor's Scholarships (formerly WPRS). Awards made for entry in October 2012 may include either or both of the following, depending on the ranking of the application:
The Chancellor's Scholarship pays academic fees at the Home/EU rate, so overseas students awarded a Chancellor's Scholarship will need to fund the difference between the Home/EU fee rate and the Overseas fee they will be required to pay. Occasionally, academic departments may be able to assist in funding the difference, entirely at their discretion and as their budget allows. However, all eligible overseas students applying for a Chancellor's Scholarship will also be considered for a Chancellor's International Scholarship, which pays the full overseas fee, by using a single application for both competitions. Further information can be found here. |
