April Gallwey

Background

I previously held an Early Career Fellowship at the IAS (October 2011 - June 2012). I completed my PhD thesis: 'Lone Motherhood in England, 1945-1990: Economy, Agency and Identity' in 2012. My doctorate was supported by a three-year Warwick Postgraduate Scholarship and supervised by Dr Mathew Thomson in the Department of History.

Research

My research interests are in twentieth-century British history with a particular focus on post-war class and gender relations, families and households and oral history interviewing. My PhD thesis explored the socio-economic history of single mothers in the post-war period using life history interviews from the UK's National Sound Archive, as well as contemporary sociological surveys.
