Personal and professional profile

Events organisation

March 2013: I was awarded an HRC Doctoral Fellowship, and organised an interdisciplinary conference entitled 'What is Old Age? New Perspectives from the Humanities'.

This conference drew together over 50 scholars from across the world and the disciplines – from Texas to Kiev, from art history to anthropology – to discuss differing perspectives on ageing and late-life. The keynote speakers were Professors Helen Small (Oxford) and Pat Thane (KCL).

It prompted a short segment on BBC Radio 3’s Night Waves, which can be heard here.

May 2010: Organiser, the Postgraduate History of Medicine Summit. This day-long event was designed to bring together postgraduates in the History of Medicine from across the country to share ideas and experiences. It established the Postgraduate Forum for the History of Medicine, a network of (mostly) British-based postgraduates working in the History of Medicine. Two subsequent summits have been held at QMUL and Swansea.

Teaching

2011-12; 2013-14: Seminar tutor to first year undergraduates at Warwick on the Making of the Modern World course. Described by my students as ‘enthusiastic’, ‘well-prepared’ and ‘knowledgeable’; my seminars as ‘engaging’, ‘varied’ and ‘dynamic’.

2007-9: I am also a fully-qualified and experienced secondary school teacher. Between 2007 and 2009 I taught History, German and a number of other subjects to 11-18 year-olds at Westminster Academy in London as part of the Teach First Program. I designed my own schemes of work, recruited students to History, and taught exam classes at GCSE and IB (International Baccaleureat). I am still a Teach First Ambassador.

Media

This year I have both contributed, and acted as a script consultant, to the two-part ITV documentary Secrets From the Asylum. The first episode airs at 9pm on Wednesday 20th August on ITV1.

In March 2011, and again in April 2014, I was invited to take part in a workshop as part of the AHRC/BBC Radio 3 New Generation Thinkers project.

As an undergraduate, I was Head of the Speech department at Radio Warwick: Warwick's student radio station.
