Non-History Students Seeking a History or CAS Module as an Outside Option

The History Department welcomes Warwick University students from other academic departments who are interested in studying a History or CAS module as an outside option, and approximately twenty to thirty non-History students choose to take an Outside Option in the History Department each year. The policy detailed below applies to all Warwick University students from academic departments other than History who wish to apply for a place on a History or CAS module as an Outside Option.

  • All History Department undergraduate modules are designated as either first-year, second-year, or final-year modules. Outside Option students are only permitted to apply for a module place that relates to their year of study, even if their home department has given them permission to take a module from a different year of study. Therefore final-year students cannot study second-year or first-year History modules, second-year students cannot study final-year or first-year History modules, and first-year students cannot study second-year or final-year History modules.
  • Only MA students are permitted to apply for a place on a History Department MA modules. Undergraduate students and PhD students are not permitted to study a History Department MA module.
  • No students are permitted to audit or observe a History Department undergraduate or MA module. Only those students studying the module for full credit are permitted to attend the lectures and seminars for that module.
  • All History Department undergraduate and MA modules available as Outside Options are weighted at either 30 CATS or 15 CATS, and cannot be adapted to any other CATS weighting.
  • All students taking a History Department module as an Outside Option must follow the History Department deadlines, processes, and procedures for the assessment of that module.
  • Undergraduate students seeking a History or CAS Outside Option are restricted to a maximum of 30 CATS of History or CAS modules in any one academic year.
  • Students seeking a place on a History Department undergraduate final-year module as an Outside Option must have studied a History Department second-year module, or the equivalent at another institution as part of a Year Abroad. It is strongly recommended that eligible students seeking a place on a History Department undergraduate final-year module as an Outside Option apply for a place on an Advanced Option rather than a Special Subject or Historiography.
  • Whilst every effort is made to accommodate a request to study in the History Department, History and CAS students (both single and joint honours History and CAS students, and including 'History, Part-Time' students, 'Liberal Arts, History Pathway' students, and 'History and Global Sustainable Development' students) will be given preference over Outside Option students in the module allocations and so in any instance where the demand for a module exceeds the module capacity it is very unlikely that an Outside Option student will be allocated a place.
  • Gaining the permission of a member of History Department teaching staff to take a module does not guarantee a place on that module. Nor does gaining the permission of a member of staff from a student's home department guarantee a place on that module. Nor does filling in the eVision Module Registration (eMR) system with the desired module guarantee a place on that module. Outside Option students can only gain an undergraduate module place by applying through the History Department online module nomination forms in the first half of the Summer term (for second-year and final-year modules) or in the first two days of the Autumn term (for first-year modules) and subsequently being informed of the results of their application, and only then should the module be registered on the eVision Module Registration (eMR) system.

Please note that there are separate policies for History and CAS students considering Outside Options and for Visiting International Students (please see the links below).
