The Somali within: Questions of Language, Identity and Resistance in Post-colonial Italian literature

I am currently in my second year of Ph.D, supervised by Dr Jennifer Burns. My research aims to analyse Somali-Italian literature, particularly focusing on the oeuvre of second-generation writers (Cristina Ali Farah, Igiaba Scego). The context of Italian postcolonial literary discourse in the Horn of Africa will be analysed, by providing a cultural legacy of Italian colonialism. Furthermore, Somali migration to Italy is presented in its specificity, as is prejudice against immigrants in contemporary Italy, especially those who have Muslim background. These writers'ability to challenge the preconceptions against immigrants will also be evaluated. The recognition of these writers within the literary canon will be discussed, by trying to redefine Italian literary studies in a post-hegemonic and trans-national perspective.
