The School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Warwick welcomes strong applications to the Leverhulme Trust Early-Career Fellowship scheme. The School has enjoyed important successes in this scheme in recent years and is keen to support postdoctoral candidates whose profiles fit the scheme and whose proposed research speaks to the School’s key research strands within and across French, German, Hispanic and Italian Studies.

Warwick's School of Modern Languages and Cultures is one of the leading sites of research in its associated disciplines in the UK. Its ambitious activities draw on the excellent research profiles of French Studies, German Studies, Hispanic Studies, and Italian Studies. Recent appointments and a number of major externally-funded projects have reinforced expertise in key strands, including nineteenth-century French cultural studies and history of medicine, modern French history and politics, modern German literature, culture, history and politics, medieval and early modern Italian intellectual history, modern Italian literatures and cultures, Hispanic, Caribbean, Central and South American Studies.

While maintaining already recognized research excellence across a wide chronological and geographical range, the School strongly promotes innovative research in several interdisciplinary fields such as film history and aesthetics, postcolonial and transnational studies, translation studies, war, trauma and memory studies, and representations of disability, gender, sexuality, and cultural identity. It raises issues of linguistic, cultural, regional, national, and ethnic diversity in Europe, Africa, North America, the Caribbean, and Central and South America, explores the significance and impact of many different types of aesthetic expression and conceptualization, philosophical, political and cultural thinking, and pays particular attention to the reception and reshaping of philosophical, intellectual, or literary traditions, cultural hybridity and transnationalization, encounters and translations between cultures, literal and intellectual mobility, and reconceptualisations of art.

With ten postdoctoral fellows and around fifty postgraduate researchers currently working within the School, the environment for early-career researchers is a vibrant and welcoming one. Five of these postdoctoral fellows and nineteen PhD researchers are in Italian Studies alone, creating a particularly active and wide-ranging intellectual community for new researchers in the discipline. Candidates will be required to submit a one-page research proposal and an outline CV by 23rd January 2015. Decisions about which candidates to take forward to full Leverhulme applications will be made in early February, in order to submit full applications by the Leverhulme deadline of 5^th March 2015.
