About

Dr. Giacomo Mannironi is Early Career Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies, Warwick. He graduated from the University of Bologna in 2005 and did a PhD in Literary Genres (Comparative Literature) at the University of L'Aquila (2006–2009). From 2011 to 2015 he was a PhD student at the School of Modern Languages (Italian Studies), working on the Eighteenth Century Venetian novel and its readership. He defended his thesis in March 2015.

Research interests

PhD Thesis: Libri disonesti: education and disobedience in the eighteenth-century Venetian novel (1753-1769)

Dott. Mannironi's PhD thesis focuses on the eighteenth-century Venetian novel, a genre which had a large success between the 1750s to the 1770s. The two most important and prolific novelists of this period are Pietro Chiari (1712-1785) and Antonio Piazza (1742-1825).

The project centres on the relationships between the novel and the socio-cultural context of readers. In order to understand the readership of the novel, I have focused on the publishing history of this genre, and in particular the activities of Venetian booksellers and printers in the second half of the eighteenth-century. In 2012 I spent three months working in Venetian archives and libraries, with the help of a research grant from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Fundation.

The second part of the thesis centres on the representation of education and disobedience in four novels published between 1753 and 1769, investigating the relationship between the representation of social tensions and conflicts related to education and disobedience, and the world of novels' readers.
