The Arts Faculty is running a small programme of events and funding opportunites in 2010-11 aimed at postdoctoral staff teaching or researching in the Arts Faculty, including those who have very recently finished their PhDs.  Funding for this comes from the "Roberts Agenda" money provided by the Higher Education Funding Council for England.  The Roberts Agenda includes the creation and promotion of career development opportunities for postdoctoral researchers.

Arts Faculty Provision and Funding Opportunities

1.  Early Career Researcher's Group:  an informal group (tea, coffee, wine) for those who have submitted their PhD or who have their PhD and an opportunity to get together and exchange ideas. Arina Cirstea, Charlotte Mathieson and Jeanine Tuschling are going to be running this for this year, and they will email all those on the circulation list with details shortly. http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/postdocs/ecrg/

2.  Publishing Surgery 27th January, 2011 and a further date in the summer term tbc:  A former commissioning editor from Cambridge University Press and Palgrave will be spending two days at Warwick University (in H448), and will conduct individual meetings/surgeries aimed at talking you through how to get your article, edited book or monograph into a publishable state.  A unique opportunity to get some informed, bespoke advice from inside the academic publishing industry.  In order to maximise the benefit of the surgery, please submit some material in advance to Kerry Drakeley in the Arts Faculty Office.  Depending on your stage, this could be a formal publishing proposal, an abstract and chapter breakdown of your thesis, a one or two-page description of your proposed project.  Please submit this and make an appointment for a timeslot (by emailing Kerry) no later than the 17th January 2011, preferably a good deal earlier.

 3.  Networking grants (up to £300).  These grants are to enable you to develop your career by either a) attending/giving a paper at an event or conference b) going to visit a key academic or group of academics c) inviting a key academic in your field to Warwick for a meeting/workshop etc.  In order to apply, please submit

i) a one-age CV

ii) a statement (half to one page) of the networking opportunity you have in mind and its benefit to your postdoctoral career

iii) approximate costings (you will be required to submit receipts at the end of the process)

Applications are on a rolling basis, and we will aim to let you know within three weeks or your application.  Please submit your application to Kerry Drakeley.  It will be evaluated by at least two academic staff in the Arts Faculty.  You will also be asked to submit a brief report (along with receipts) after the grant has been spent.

4.  Masterclass grants (up to £500).  These grants allow you to invite a distinguished person in your field to Warwick to lead a masterclass/workshop.  You are encouraged to explore ways of making the masterclass a benefit to other early career researchers where possible and to PhD students.  The application process is the same as for the networking grants (above), but please also provide an additional statement about the staff and students who would benefit from the masterclass and what form this would take.

Note:  All funds must be spent by 31st July 2011.
