Dr Stella Fletcher

I am a product of the University of Warwick’s distinctive emphasis on Italian Renaissance history: my undergraduate studies included a term in Venice and my doctoral thesis, on Venetian cardinals in Rome between 1471 and 1492, was supervised by Professor Michael Mallett. From 1991 to 1993 I was attached to Warwick’s European Humanities Research Centre and acted as Professor Mallett’s research assistant. I have been an Associate Fellow of the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance since 2002. In that capacity I compiled much of the material relating the correspondence and correspondents of Lorenzo de’ Medici which may be found elsewhere on this website. In 2009 I maintained my Warwick connection by giving a paper at the convegno held in Venice in memory of Professor Mallett.

From 1993 to 2001 I was a lecturer in History at King Alfred’s College, Winchester. Between 2002 and 2005 I taught for the departments of Continuing Education in the Universities of Bath, Birmingham and Manchester, as well as for Alston Hall College in Lancashire. Between 2005 and 2009 I taught part-time in the School of History, University of Liverpool, and have undertaken part-time teaching in the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures, University of Manchester, since 2007.

Between 1996 and 2005 I edited the Bulletin of the Society for Renaissance Studies and was a member of the editorial board of the journal Renaissance Studies. I have also served as Fellowships Officer of the Society for Renaissance Studies. In one capacity or another, I was on the Committee (now Council) of the SRS continuously from 1996 to 2010. In 2003 I joined the Committee of the Ecclesiastical History Society and have been Honorary Secretary of the EHS since 2005.

My principal publications include:
The Longman Companion to Renaissance Europe, 1390-1530 (Longman, 1999)
Ed., with Christine Shaw, The World of Savonarola: Italian elites and perceptions of crisis (Ashgate, 2000)
With Dominic Aidan Bellenger, Princes of the Church: a history of the English cardinals (Sutton Publishing, 2001)
With Dominic Aidan Bellenger, The Mitre and the Crown: a history of the archbishops of Canterbury (Sutton Publishing, 2005)
Cardinal Wolsey: a life in Renaissance Europe (Continuum, 2009)
For Oxford Bibliographies Online I have made a number of contributions to the bibliography of the Renaissance and Reformation, launched in 2010.

My current projects include a history of the Ecclesiastical History Society, editing a volume of essays on William Roscoe’s Italian interests (under contract with Ashgate) and a chapter on the Italian diaspora of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries for vol. VII in the series Il Rinascimento Italiano e l’Europa (Fondazione Cassamarca).

I broadcast regularly on Vatican Radio, BBC Radio and BBC News 24.
