The Centre for the Study of the Renaissance organises a seminar on ‘Latin for Research in the Humanities’. This seminar is intended for postgraduates and staff who have a basic knowledge of the language (typically: GCSE Latin, or who have completed the Classics Department's Beginners' course) and wish to brush up on, or maintain, these Latin language skills. It is also intended for researchers who – having had some training in classical Latin – wish to develop proficiency in medieval, early modern, or modern Latin.
The seminar offers a means of reviewing Latin grammar and addresses issues such as differences in vocabulary and spelling, irregular punctuation, the use of abbreviations, etc. which problematize the reading of postclassical texts. It also provides an introduction to specific dictionaries and other reference works. A large part of each session is spent on reading Latin texts ranging from all periods of Latinity and chosen according to the interests of the participants. Students are welcome to bring their own texts for discussion.
All sessions are taught by Aileen Das, PhD student in the Department of Classics and Ancient History. Please let the Renaissance Centre secretary, Jayne Brown, know if you wish to attend this class ( renaissance@warwick.ac.uk). The seminar will take place on a weekly basis during term time, in room H450, on Tuesdays, from 5 to 6.30 pm.

Former students say:
-
The classes have been really helpful by covering the basics and applying them to the sort of Latin documents we are likely to come across in our research. Studying Latin this way is much more relevant - and can even be fun!
-
The best way to learn; friendly, relaxed and informal but with a serious purpose.
-
It is essential for my Art History studies that I improve my lapsed Latin and I appreciate the flexible structure of teaching which adapts the coursework to the needs of the current group
