John Webster (1578/80-1638?)

Welcome to the John Webster site!

This site contains information on Webster's life and is home to one of his plays: The White Devil. As with every dramatist on the Elizabethan and Jacobean Drama website, the Webster site is organised into individual subpages as follows: Life of Webster, respective play, and Bibliography. The material available on the play ranges from text to stage history, with a focus on twentieth century British stage productions, from Webster criticism to production reviews, from play related activities to picture galleries, from survey of film productions to electronic editions of the plays.

The John Webster sub-site is the result of the collaborative work conducted by Rachel Drew and Dr Nicoleta Cinpoes as part of the project Contextualising John Webster's The White Devil: Politics, Religion and Censorship during the Reign of James I (funded by the Undergraduate Research Student Scheme, University of Warwick, 2007).

To find out more about how The White Devil  speaks to students today visit the key fragment: V.6:214-276. If you are interested in Wbster criticism - old and new - visit the Bibliography.
