Storytelling Meets Science on the Web

The Centre for Cultural Policy Studies will be home to the University of Warwick's first Popathon as part of The Mediasmith Project, a fellowship project funded by the Institute of Advanced Teaching and Learning to explore transmedia storytelling, documentary making and other digital media and methods in research and teaching, led by Ruth Leary. Popathon is an international series of hackathon events which bring digital storytellers, technologists and designers together to prototype the future of web-native storytelling. Participants will collaborate in a 24 hour 'sprint' to create an interactive story experience.

Popathon events are run by facilitators Philo Van Kemenade and Gilles Pradeau, a documentary filmmaker from France. Learning, making and sharing are key elements of the Popathon process. The aim is to experiment and create prototypes: projects that try out a focused piece of functionality by using the capability of the web to create an interactive narrative experience. At the end of the Popathon all prototypes are made available as open source. You can see examples of the outcomes of previous Popathons here. Ruth says,

In this joint event we’re hoping to inspire interdisciplinary teams of academics, students, web developers, technologists and filmmakers to collaborate together. The process will be facilitated by Philo and Gilles based on Agile methodology and teams will produce visible outputs whilst learning new skills and being introduced to new tools and platforms. We believe it has the potential to spark new ideas and collaborative projects within the academy and beyond.

The Popathon X Mediasmith hack jam will take place on Friday 27th & Saturday 28th February 2015. Please visit the events page for full details.
