Race, Racism and Digital Communication Workshop

We are pleased to announce that registrations are open for an event jointly hosted by the Centre for Cultural Policy Studies and the Sociology Department on 'Race, Racism and Digital Communication' that will take place on Wednesday 11th of June from 10:30am to 1pm..

The speakers’ line up include:

Alana Lentin from the University of Western Sydney, who will talk about her new work on transformations of race through translation within digital communication networks, relating this to her involvement in the campaign to boycott companies profiting from mandatory detention of asylum seekers in Australia and the relationships between structural and sensationalist racism in online spaces.

Sanjay Sharma, from Brunel University, who will discuss his current work on online ambient racism.

Kirsten Forkert, from Birmingham City University, who will talk about her research on social media, racism and migration, including involvement in research into the effects of the 'Go Home' van and other Home Office migration campaigns.

Nathaniel Tkacz, from Warwick's Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies, will respond before we open up the discussion to the workshop as a whole.

The panel will speak about their developing work in this area, but also welcome discussion and participation from all those who attend. The workshop will be followed by lunch, with a chance for more informal discussion.
