Teaching and learning strategy
Classes are interactive, comprising of seminars, workshops, ideas cafes, and are often student-led and enquiry-based. Smaller, highly interactive group learning means we can integrate technologies where appropriate: recording, capturing and designing knowledge acquisition. Fostering participation, critical self-reflection and team building, our teaching and learning strategy ensures students are self-directed and employment focused. Some of our modules feature collaborative projects with real creative and media businesses as well as industry placements. As well as developing knowledge, all our courses enhance research, writing and communication skills through group projects, presentations, case studies, reports, critiques and assignments that often require engagement with audio-visual technologies.
We take a blended approach to assessment. While there are no formal examinations on any of our programmes, there is a mixture of assessment strategies designed to test the widest range of skills. Written assignments come in a variety of forms: essays, case studies, evaluations, reports, proposals, and business plans. These are complemented by group presentations and tasks, team building exercises and creative projects.

How can the arts and culture contribute to a better world? This unique programme will give you the opportunity to explore the relationship between arts, creative and cultural enterprise and development. You will look at arts and cultural enterprises making a difference, in both ‘advanced’ and ‘developing’ countries, including post-communist societies, religious republics and conflict zones as well as in small-scale local economies. You will examine the management systems and policies which lie behind these activities. You will consider the global sustainability agenda, and the growing support for culture and development from the UN, EU and OECD. Through the course, you will develop your own strategies for applying creative arts and enterprise to produce social transformation, innovation and sustainable communities.
This is the first programme in the UK to examine the business of creativity, from the global cultural industries to the freelance economy. The course is designed to cut across different industries and to cross the boundary between theory and practice. For anybody who wants to turn creative ideas into a successful business, this course explores the special relationship between creative imagination and strategic management, from the international industrial context down to the practical dilemmas confronting the small creative firm.
This programme is designed to enable students to develop their understanding of media communications in an increasingly globalised world. It combines theoretical study with applied perspectives on global media – examining media content and products in terms of their creative processes of production and their strategic uses in communication. It also looks at the contexts of creative and strategic activity - the power of global media in developing new global cultures of taste and consumption and in changing the relation between culture and politics.
This programme enables students to understand the theory and practice of cultural policy in different countries from around the world. Students are also able to develop their skills in arts management, spend some time on placement within a cultural organisation (optional) and conduct their own research project. The course is particularly attractive to those seeking or developing careers in arts and cultural management either in the UK or abroad. Non-European students may be particularly interested in the study of alternative models of cultural policy.
