Study at the Centre

[c]
The distinctive approach of the Centre's teaching is an engagement with both the practical realities of working in the cultural sector and with theoretical questions around the conditions of contemporary culture. The Centre is thus particularly attractive to students wishing to develop their careers and at the same time reflect on the wider implications of their work within a stimulating intellectual environment. Graduates from the Centre have an excellent employment record. We offer three taught MA programmes and a PhD in Cultural Policy Studies: MA in European Cultural Policy and ManagementThis internationally popular programme enables students to understand the theory and practice of cultural policy in different European countries (including the UK). Students are also able to develop their skills in arts management, spend some time on placement within a cultural organisation (optional) and conduct their own research project. The course will be attractive to those seeking or developing careers in arts and cultural management either in the UK or abroad. Non-European students may be particularly interested in the study of alternative models of cultural policy. MA in Creative and Media EnterprisesThis is the first programme in the UK to examine the business of creativity, from the global cultural industries to the freelance economy. The course is designed to cut across different industries and to cross the boundary between theory and practice. For anybody who wants to turn creative ideas into a successful business, this course explores the special relationship between creative imagination and strategic management, from the international industrial context down to the practical dilemmas confronting the small creative firm. MA in International Design and Communication ManagementThis course will equip you with the intellectual skills, professional knowledge and organisational skills necessary for a successful career in the communication design industry or other design or communication based professions. It teaches industry-relevant knowledge and professional skills within a framework of cultural analysis - the aesthetics of design, the ethics of the design profession, and the politics of visual representation. Communication design is both culture and business, it is both art and commerce; it involves an understanding of art, as well as management structures, as much as markets and their consumers. PhD in Cultural Policy StudiesWe welcome applications for the degree of PhD in Cultural Policy Studies, on either a full-time or a part-time basis, from those who have successfully completed one of the Centre's taught MA programmes and from those who have graduated in a relevant subject elsewhere with appropriate academic qualifications.
