The fees from beginning September 2012 to end December 2013 are:

  • € 12 000 third-country students (those not from an EU country)
  • € 6 000 EU students

Please note that these fees cover the 16 months that the programme runs.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

THE 2012-13 ERASMUS MUNDUS SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITIONS CLOSED AT MIDNIGHT ON 3RD JANUARY 2012. REGRETTABLY, ANY APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED AFTER THAT DATE OR ANY INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS LACKING ALL THE REQUIRED SUPPORT DOCUMENTATION THAT WERE RECEIVED BY THAT DATE CANNOT BE ENTERED INTO THE SCHOLARSHIP COMPETIIONS. APPLICANTS WILL, HOWEVER, BE CONSIDERED FOR THE MAIPR PROGRAMME ITSELF.

Erasmus Mundus (EM) Scholarships are funded by the European Commission (EC), under the management of the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). EM scholarships are awarded to the strongest applicants to the MAIPR programme itself, in accordance with the rules and regulations set by the EACEA.

There are two EM scholarship competitions linked to the MAIPR programme: Category A and Category B. You do not apply separately for either of the EM scholarship competitions. Recommendations are made by the MAIPR consortium and are based solely on the quality of the application to the MAIPR programme itself. See the How to Apply webpage for more information.

Please check carefully to see which competition applies to your own circumstances:

CATEGORY A: € 36 000

Category A scholarships are aimed at covering all the costs of the programme, therefore fees, travel and living expenses over 16 months. For 2012-13, we will be awarding the following number of scholarships:

  • 7 scholarships for eligible third-country applicants (therefore those whose nationality and place of abode are outside of the EU/EEA/EFTA area).
  • 1 scholarship for an eligible applicant from the West Balkans and Turkey area. Eligibility for this category does not preclude a student from being considered for the Category A or B competitions;
  • 2 EU Neighbourhood Partnership (ENPI) scholarships to applicants from the following two areas:
    • ENPI East: for one eligible applicant from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, or the Ukraine. Eligibility for this category does not preclude a student from being considered for the Category A or B competitions;
    • ENPI South: for one eligible applicant from Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Occupied Palestinian Territory, Syria, or Tunisia. Eligibility for this category does not preclude a student from being considered for the Category A or B competitions;

All applicants to the above scholarship competitons must have lived, studied and/or worked for LESS THAN a cumulative period of 12 months within the EU/EEA/EFTA area between 1 March 2007 and 29 February 2012.

After the € 12 000 programme fee has been deducted from the EM scholarship, you will receive 24 000. This amount is made up as follows:

  • € 8 000 travel and installation allowance
  • € 16 000 monthly stipend

The above will usually be paid in 16 x monthly instalments of € 1 500. The first payment will be made shortly after arrival at your home university.

category B: € 17 000

Category B scholarships are considered as financial contributions rather than full scholarships. For 2012-13 we will be awarding the following number of scholarships:

  • 5 scholarships for eligible EU/EEA/EFTA applicants, also third-country applicants who have lived, studied and/or worked for MORE THAN a cumulative period of 12 months within the EU/EEA/EFTA area between between 1 March 2007 and 29 February 2012.

After the programme fee has been deducted from the EM scholarship, an EU student will receive € 8 000 living allowance a €3 000 travel and installation allowance. This will be paid at a rate of €687.50.

EM scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. It is therefore important that your MAIPR application is as strong as possible as competition for the scholarships is very strong. You should also bear in mind that you may be accepted onto the MAIPR programme but not be awarded a scholarship. Remember: if your application for the 2012-13 MAIPR is received after the 3rd-January 2012 deadline or it is incomplete on that date, unfortunately we cannot enter you into the EM scholarship competition.

PLEASE NOTE: there are always far more applicants than available scholarships. Those placed on the reserve (or waiting) list for either scholarship competition therefore may be offered a scholarship only if a main-list student does not take up his or her place on the MAIPR course. Your chance of being offered such a vacated scholarship depends on your place on the reserve list: if you are no. 1 you therefore stand a much better chance of getting a scholarship than if you are no. 20.

The competitions are open to MAIPR applicants only and are therefore not available to students applying for other programmes.

NB: EM scholarship offers are tied to a particular year of entry therefore scholarship offers cannot be deferred. If you choose to defer your place on the MAIPR programme itself, any scholarship offer made to you for that year of entry would be passed on to the next eligible candidate. You would automatically be entered into the following year's EM scholarship competition and be considered alongside the other competition candidates.
