Centre for Cognitive and Neural Systems

Welcome to the website of the Centre for Cognitive and Neural Systems (CCNS). Cognitive systems are natural or artificial information processing systems, including those responsible for perception, motor control, learning, reasoning, decision making, and communication.  The human brain is a prime example of a natural cognitive system, but many artificial systems and robotic devices share the objectives and computational challenges of real brains.  An understanding of these objectives and challenges, and of the functions and processes that are implemented to meet them, requires a multidisciplinary approach, encompassing neuroscience, psychology, systems engineering, robotics, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science.

CCNS was established in 2007, following a joint initiative between the Department of Psychology and the School of Engineering.  The Centre provides a focal point for interdisciplinary research in Cognitive Science and Cognitive Systems, bringing together researchers from a range of disciplines.  Our aim is to provide a home for research of the highest quality, and to provide support for projects that make a significant contribution to our understanding of cognition and cognitive systems.

Research in CCNS is organised around five major research themes:

  • sensory & perceptual processing;
  • high-level human perception;
  • human action & motor control;
  • communication & education;
  • learning and memory.

In these pages, we provide an overview of research at the University of Warwick that falls within the remit of CCNS.  We provide links to researchers with an interest in the Centre.  As we progress and our activities expand, this website will continue to offer information about the projects that have emerged within the Centre.  Of course, we will be delighted to discuss any research ideas and opportunities for collaboration.
