How do I use this calendar?

You can click on an event to display further information about it.

The toolbar above the calendar has buttons to view different events. Use the left and right arrow icons to view events in the past and future. The button inbetween returns you to today's view. The button to the right of this shows a mini-calendar to let you quickly jump to any date.

The dropdown box on the right allows you to see a different view of the calendar, such as an agenda or a termly view.

If this calendar has tags, you can use the labelled checkboxes at the top of the page to select just the tags you wish to view, and then click "Show selected". The calendar will be redisplayed with just the events related to these tags, making it easier to find what you're looking for.

Title: Can Serious Games save lives?

    Abstract:

The Lecture from Prof Sara de Freitas will focus upon outlining several grand challenges that face us as a result of global economic downturn, growing population and globalisation. These challenges are exacerbated by the development of interconnected systems which are vulnerable to systematic collapse. At the same time as these real world challenges new technologies and forms such as social networks and online games are becoming more and more pervasive and are now played by increasing numbers of people. This trend towards pervasive social game play is leading to a trend known as gamification, where the use of game elements and metaphors to solve real world problems, motivate learners and raise awareness, to provide therapy and to train hard-to-reach groups is leading to a new trend where games are increasingly used to solve problems and provide engaging education and training. This lecture focuses upon flagship projects in the area of emergency management training, as illustration of the capability of games to be used to save lives and help us to become more robust and resilient in the face of the significant global challenges we face.

Title: Impact of Complex Network Topology on Synchronization Dynamics

    Abstract:

Synchrony is one of the most common dynamical states emerging on networks. The speed of convergence towards synchrony provides a fundamental collective time scale for synchronizing systems. What impact does the network topology have on this time scale? Here, the small-world model allows for a study of network topologies ranging from completely ordered, grid-like, to completely disordered, random, including intermediate, partially disordered topologies. Although the small-world models based on rewiring have received massive attention both theoretically and in applications, for most of their features analytical predictions are not known to date. In particular, the spectrum of small-world Laplacians - characterizing fundamental asymptotic features - has only been studied for several specific cases and numerically, but a general derivation of reliable analytic predictions is still missing. An analytic mean-field theory for the spectra of small-world models closes this gap. This theory may provide analytical insights to empirically found features of dynamics on small-world networks from various research fields, including biology, physics, engineering and social science.

Title: Experimentally verified neuron models and mathematical tools for their analyses

    Abstract:

n this talk I will review some of the efforts we have made over the last few years to develop mathematically tractable and experimentally tested models of neocortical neurons and synapses. Using a dynamic IV curve method I will show how surprisingly accurate non-linear integrate-and-fire models can be extracted from a few tens of seconds of intracellular recording. In the context of stochastic synaptic drive, I will outline a simple method for deriving the steady-state and dynamical properties of populations and networks comprised of this class of verified model neuron. I will then go on to cover recent experimental and theoretical work on the effect of the finite amplitude of post-synaptic potentials on integration and transmission between neocortical cells.

Title: Political Activity in Social Media

    Abstract:

Online social media are complementing and in some cases replacing person-to-person social interaction and redefining the diffusion of information. In particular, microblogs have become crucial grounds on which public relations, marketing, and political battles are fought. We introduce an extensible framework that will enable the real-time analysis of meme diffusion in social media by mining, visualizing, mapping, classifying, and modeling massive streams of public microblogging events.
Using a combination of network clustering algorithms and manually-annotated data we demonstrate that the network of political retweets exhibits a highly segregated partisan structure, with extremely limited connectivity between left- and right-leaning users. We further examine partisan differences in the behavior, communication patterns and social interactions of politically-active Twitter users. Analysis of the network derived by their patterns of communication in proximity of the 2010 midterm congressional elections reveals an highly segregated, well clustered structure. We find that in contrast to the online political dynamics of the 2008 campaign, right-leaning Twitter users exhibit greater levels of political activity, a more tightly interconnected social structure, and a communication network topology that facilitates the rapid and broad dissemination of political information.

Title: Individual and Collective Attention - Dunbar's Number and Online Popularity

    Abstract:

Micro-blogging systems such as Twitter expose digital traces of social discourse with an unprecedented degree of resolution of individual behaviors. They offer an opportunity to investigate both individual and collective behavioral patterns and to disentangle the temporal, spatial and topical aspects of human activity.
We analyze a dataset of Twitter conversations collected across six months involving 1.7 million individuals and test the theoretical cognitive limit on the number of stable social relationships known as Dunbar’s number. We find that the data are in agreement with Dunbar’s result; users can entertain a maximum of 100–200 stable relationships. Thus, the ‘economy of attention’ is limited in the online world by cognitive and biological constraints as predicted by Dunbar’s theory.
We also analyze spikes of collective attention in Twitter, and specifically on peaks in the popularity of hashtags and find that the evolution of hashtag popularity over time defines discrete classes. Each dynamical classe is linked to the event it hashtags represents and by using text mining techniques we are able to provide a semantic characterization of the hashtag classes.

Title: Faster detection of attacks on computer networks

    Abstract:

A common problem in analyzing data from a complex network is that you have a pattern (written in a standard “regular expression” format), and you want to quickly find all the matches to this pattern in a large set of data items, and to report back parts of the matches to the pattern. This kind of pattern matching is used, for example, to detect attacks on computer networks. I’ll describe the usual ways of solving this problem, which are very fast for small or simple patterns, but can take an impractically long time for some complicated patterns. Then I’ll describe a new, faster way of doing this, developed with some colleagues at HP Labs.
