Degrees, Accreditation and Grading

The programme leads to either a JOINT DEGREE between University of Warwick and University of Gothenburg. This is a Masters Degree (MSc) in “Complex System Science (Erasmus Mundus)”. Those students who have a cmobination of study at nodes other the the Universities of Warwick and Gothenburg will be awarded a DOUBLE DEGREE with Chalmers University awarding their MSc in Complex Adaptive Systems and Ecole Polytechnique awarding a new strand of the cross-disciplinary LoPHISS Masters, alongsdie the Complex System Sciebce masters from Warwcick and Gothenburg.

Our joint course is fully compliant with Bologna, ECTS and national specifications (for example we require 60 ECTS of taught material to satisfy a Swedish regulation and distinguish M1 and M2 level material to satisfy French norms).

Professional accreditation will be through our partner the Complex Systems Society. This is a developmental engagement on both sides to establish and apply the appropriate accreditation framework and process. Thus it should be seen as an early outcome of the programme, from which we expect all of our graduates to benefit.

Use of ECTS in credit and grading.

ECTS form the basis of all credit transfer between the partners. Taught modules are assessed by the node delivering them, with the teaching and examination materials subject to scrutiny by the Joint Academic Board. Each research project (20 ECTS in year one and 30 ECTS in year two) will be subject to joint or multiple assessment by staff from two different nodes under a single assessment framework based at the coordinating node.

For grading Ecole Polytechnique already uses an ECTS-based scheme, and following recent legislation the Swedish Universities will by 2010 be using ECTS grades. Click here for how we will map percentage marks from Warwick onto the ECTS grades used by the other partners.

Assessment of each course component (of 4 ECTS or more) will be by the University governing that module, with grades as above. Students will be required:

  • to pass all the compulsory elements - M1 core modules and M1 Project;
  • to pass further M1 option modules bringing total first year credit passed to at least 57.5 ECTS at an overall standard of grade C or higher (the requirement for progression to M2) ;
  • to pass at least 27.5 ECTS of M2 Modules and the M2 Project, such as (possibly counting Complex Systems Seminar up to 5 ECTS) to bring their total credit to 120 ECTS at an overall standard of grade C or higher.
  • to pass a total of 70 ECTS taught credit across the M1 and M2 year at an overall standard of grade C or higher.

Joint Diploma Supplement.

Each student will be issued with one (joint) Diploma Supplement detailing their whole programme of study, coordinated and issued by the coordinating node. In respect of Double Degree students, it will make clear that they have completed one joint course, and it will include students’ extra attainments in “Transferable Skills”. This document will be in English, though components attained in French or Swedish will also carry original language titles.

In-career development

The individual nodes can offer certification of lesser amounts of study than the full programme (including Diploma (60 ECTS) and Certificate (30 ECTS) in Complexity Science through the coordinating node). These will not necessarily be joint/double qualifications; they will permit (but not require) mobility and study in the partner institutions.
