New Professor in Theoretical Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Warwick, one of the leading computer science departments, invites exceptional candidates to apply for a position of Full Professor of Theoretical Computer Science, beginning September/October 2011. Outstanding candidates with proven excellence in research in theoretical computer science (algorithms and complexity), discrete mathematics and operational research will be considered, to complement, strengthen and provide leadership in research and teaching. The Professorship is a permanent position based in the Department of Computer Science. The appointee will be expected to play a leading role in the Department of Computer Science, and to actively contribute to research, teaching, and administrative activities in the Department of Computer Science, the Centre for Discrete Mathematics and its Applications (DIMAP) and the University of Warwick. Special consideration will be given to candidates with interdisciplinary interests (related to algorithms, operational research, and discrete mathematics) and with industrial research experience.

Applicants should submit their applications online as described in detail at https://secure.admin.warwick.ac.uk/webjobs/jobs/academic/job11928.html.

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Warwick is one of the leading computer science departments in the United Kingdom for both research and teaching. The Department's research has a strong theoretical foundation upon which is built a variety of activities. Research activities in the Department include algorithms and complexity, formal methods and the semantics of programming languages, computational biology, software technologies and human aspects of computing, intelligent and adaptive systems, high-performance computing, and image and signal processing. The Department is widely recognized as a leading centre for algorithms and complexity in Europe.

The position is affiliated with the Foundations of Computer Science Research Group (FoCS) in the Department of Computer Science. Research in FoCS is concerned with various topics of Theoretical Computer Science, Algorithms, Complexity Theory, Logic, and Automata and Verification. It is expected that the new professor, together with the new Assistant Professor (the post has been advertised recently), will expand and strengthen the research in FoCS.

The position is affiliated with the Centre for Discrete Mathematics and its Applications (DIMAP). DIMAP is an internationally renowned research centre focusing its activities in algorithms and complexity, discrete mathematics and its applications, and mathematical aspects of operational research. DIMAP was launched in March 2007 by the University of Warwick and is partially funded by the EPSRC Science and Innovation Award EP/D063191/1 of £3.8 million.
It is a multidisciplinary research centre supporting an internationally competitive programme of research in discrete modelling, algorithmic analysis, and combinatorial (discrete) optimisation. It aims to support a thriving industrial affiliates programme and develop collaborative research rooted in discrete mathematics, involving researchers at other UK universities. The Centre also contributes to the development of undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses within degrees offered by the participating departments. With a number of internationally renowned researchers, an extensive programme of scientific seminars, international workshops and visiting researchers, and a multidisciplinary angle, DIMAP is one of the leading international research centres in discrete mathematics and its applications in computer science and operational research.

This is a permanent position based in the Department of Computer Science. All applicants should hold a PhD (or equivalent) in computer science, or a closely related discipline, be committed to excellence in teaching, and have demonstrated excellence in research. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in computer science, conduct research in her/his field of expertise and actively participate in other Department of Computer Science, DIMAP, FoCS, and university activities.
