Communication skills in projects involving direct contact between researchers and participants

Wednesday 31st May 2017 - 9:30am to 1pm (TBC)
Dr. Alba Realpe, Research Fellow Clinical Trial Unit, Warwick Medical School

Although most directly relevant to those undertaking medical research, this workshop will offer important and useful training to anyone undertaking multi-site research or projects which involve direct contact. In this workshop we will stimulate discussion and provide insights on how to overcome challenges of recruiting patients into complex clinical trials. We shall discuss how to share information in an impartial manner that is conducive to recruitment.

Using real life examples of challenging randomised controlled trials of complex interventions, we will offer an innovative view of obstacles and opportunities that recruiters are likely to encounter based on our expertise and experience. Workshop participants will be encouraged to evaluate action plans and practice communication skills to optimise recruitment to complex trials.

The workshop will be delivered by a team who have recently completed training of recruiters, and recruitment of, a international multicentre randomised controlled trial of surgery versus non-operative care. The team comprises of an academic clinician, trial coordinator and qualitative researcher who have experience working on trials of complex interventions.

The workshop will be divided in two distinct segments:

i) engagement and setup of participating sites; and

ii) monitoring and promoting recruitment. Each segment will comprise of small-group work to identify challenges related to the specific topic followed by an interactive discussion with the audience. We will then move on to a problem-solving section, where we will share what we have learnt and attendees will have the chance to evaluate and propose solutions to identified challenges.
