IAS Vacation Schools and Conferences Competition 2012-13
|
This programme is designed to fund or co-fund research-orientated residential workshops or conferences at Warwick or Warwick’s conference location in Venice, Palazzo Pesaro Papafava, geared toward early career (PhD and/or recent postdoctoral) researchers. Funded projects should be focused on specific research questions, methodologies and/or themes (selected by the Warwick organisers) and normally extend over 5 days. The vacation school/conference may be based in a single department if there is a compelling case for that location, but should range intellectually beyond a single discipline or Warwick department. Formats and constituencies will vary according to field and scholarly agenda. Projects may, for example, be designed to complement departmental/University postgraduate recruitment strategies (nationally and/or internationally); to draw attention to the research potential of new University facilities; to promote new collaborations with stakeholders in business, government or industry; to address economic or societal impact agendas; or to disseminate among a cohort of early career researchers the findings of a major programme of research conducted at Warwick. As a broad rule successful proposals will allow Warwick-based PhD students and postdoctoral fellows as well as early career researchers drawn from a wider national or international pool to gain new understanding of emerging fields of scholarly analysis in dialogue with a team of more senior researchers—including both Warwick staff and external academics and experts. Applicants are encouraged (but not required) to lay groundwork for their project in the months before it is conducted by holding a seminar series, workshop or other related event geared toward early career scholars at Warwick on their chosen themes (reading groups, seminar series and/or workshops organised by Warwick PhD students or postdoctoral fellows may be included among these activities). It is expected that funded Warwick-based vacation schools will make use for some of their activities of the IAS seminar room and office space and/or of the Library’s Research Exchange facility. Applications can be made either for events that are predominantly funded by the IAS (with appropriate additional funding from departments or other University units) or co-funded by the IAS and an external funding body. In the event that an externally co-funded event is proposed, applicants may also, optionally choose to propose a more modest ‘Plan B’ event which will run with IAS and other University funding if the bid for external funding is unsuccessful. It is expected that successful schools will be held at Warwick or Venice (using Warwick student accommodation for early career participants) either in the 2012-13 Easter Vacation or during the summer vacation but may also take place in Term 3 of 2012-13 if there are compelling reasons for this timing. Programme Specifications
Selection Criteria and ProcessApplications under this scheme will be scored against the following criteria:
EligibilityEach application must be led by a permanent, non-probationary member of academic staff. It is expected that proposals will normally involve participation of more than a single Warwick academic staff member and will make appropriate use of distinguished researchers and other experts from outside the University (including scholars from outside the UK). Organising groups should also include Warwick academic-related and support staff as appropriate. This scheme is intended to be sufficiently flexible to respond to the distinctive needs and resources of a wide range of research fields (and UK Research Councils), and potential applicants are encouraged to consult in advance with the IAS Director, the Graduate School and other relevant stakeholders to craft programmes that are distinctive, relevant and fit for purpose. Proposals should focus on doctoral (not Masters-level) students and/or recent recipients of their PhD (normally within 3 years of receipt of their doctorates). A few examples of similar programmes are:
These are, however, only indicative - not binding - examples. Potential applicants are encouraged to think laterally within the broad outlines suggested above. Value and Number of AwardsThe maximum IAS contribution for each event will be £22,000 (based in Warwick) or £25,000 (based in Venice). It is expected that up to 4 awards will be made for schools to take place in 2012-13. Duration of AwardsEach event will normally be expected to last for no less than 5 days and no more than 2 weeks. Schools can be organised to occur either in the financial year ending on 31 July 2013, or (with prior agreement from the IAS Director) in August-September 2013 (financial year 2013-14). DeadlineThe deadline for applications is 12 noon on Monday 22 October 2012. |
