Leverhulme Visiting Fellowships

Programme Specifications

The Leverhulme Trust has invited the University of Warwick to participate in its Visiting Fellowship scheme for the forthcoming year. We have been asked to nominate two Visiting Fellows from across the University, who must be from overseas (see further details below) and must not have more than eight years of postdoctoral experience. Each Fellowship will be 9-12 months long, depending on the proposed programme of work. The Fellows will be expected to be based at Warwick during their Fellowships.

The IAS has been asked by the University to run an internal competition in order to select the two nominations to be put forward to Leverhulme. Each Department will be invited to submit one Fellowship nomination to this internal competition. The deadline for this scheme is 12 noon on Monday 21 November 2011.

Update: Please note that it is envisaged that Fellows will start at Warwick in Autumn 2012.

Expectations

Fellows are encouraged not only to conduct research but also to give lectures and seminars, and to participate in the intellectual life of the institution. The intention is to stimulate research activities and intellectual links between the visitors and hosts.

Typically this will include a public lecture, a research seminar, an event with Postgraduate Researchers and some student teaching activity.

In addition to the costs covered by the Leverhulme Trust, the IAS will provide £500 towards a one-day workshop. Visiting Fellows are also invited to be involved in appropriate IAS events.

Once Visiting Fellows have been selected, the following are the responsibility of the host departments:

  1. All correspondence with the Visiting Fellow
  2. Offering the Fellow advice
  3. Paying the Fellow and ensuring that only legitimate expenses are refunded
  4. Ensuring compliance with any immigration regulations
  5. Any dealings with the Inland Revenue and other public or private bodies as necessary
  6. Providing all equipment and facilities for the Fellow’s research

Selection Criteria and Process

Please note that only ONE Fellowship nomination is permitted from each Department. Where research centres have their own cost centre they are permitted to submit one nomination.

Nominating departments should provide:

1. A completed application form

2. A two-page curriculum vitae for the candidate-Fellow

3. A summary of 1200 words covering:

a. The proposed research (including brief context, main objectives, importance of the research, brief timetable, details of proposed outputs and dissemination plans)

b. The other activities (plans for lectures, seminars and any other activities)

4. An academic reference from the Visiting Fellow’s current institution

5. A supporting statement from the Head of Department (including why the Visiting Fellows would benefit the department, what they would add intellectually, how their research would fit into the broader research priorities/strategies of the department and what plans there are for teaching by the Visiting Fellows)

Nominated candidates and the proposed research and activities associated with their period of residence will be evaluated against the following criteria:

  • academic excellence indicated by CV, publications etc
  • innovative nature of proposed project
  • feasibility of proposed project
  • convincing programme of engagement activities with host unit and the university
  • degree of linkage and opportunities for co-operation with Warwick researchers
  • the Trust's priority on supporting younger scholars normally with less than 8 years of post-doctoral work

Applications will be scored against the criteria by a panel composed of the IAS Director, the Pro-Vice-Chancellors for Research, Chairs of Faculty or their designated alternates.

Eligibility

  • Fellows must NOT be UK citizens.
  • Fellows must be citizens of and permanently resident in any country other than the UK, and must intend to return to that country at the end of their Fellowship.
  • Fellows must have secured a doctorate, or be equivalently qualified, at the time of taking up the Fellowship. There is no age limit. However, the scheme is primarily intended to support younger, less experienced researchers, who have not yet spent an extended period in the UK, to enable them to develop skills and experience. Hence those with more than eight years of postdoctoral experience would not normally be considered suitable recipients.
  • The selection by the University is subject to approval by the Leverhulme Trust
  • Only one application may be made by each department. Applications may be made by research centres provided they have their own independent cost centre.
  • Eligible fields: the Leverhulme Trust supports research in all fields and the selection panel will view all fields equally.

Costs

  • An allowance for subsistence expenses of up to £1,900 per month, actual amount to depend on the amount of income of grant, if any, available to the Fellow from other sources. NB. These funds do not constitute a salary. The awards enable work on a specific range of research activities for a period of fixed duration and therefore should not be construed as a contract of employment;
  • An allowance for subsistence, at £410 per month, for an accompanying spouse or partner who is not in receipt of other income and who must plan to spend at least six months in the UK;
  • A return fare (normally the cheapest return air fare available or two one-way tickets if these are more economical) for the Fellow and accompanying spouse/partner;
  • Up to £790 for travel and subsistence within the UK, away from the host institution, for the Fellow so that he or she can attend conferences or undertake research trips.

In addition to the above costs covered by the Leverhulme Trust, the IAS will provide £500 towards a one-day workshop.

Full funding, once amounts are agreed between the institution and the Leverhulme Trust, will be advanced before the Fellow’s arrival, apart from the amount for travel within the UK which will be reimbursed at the end of the award.

Duration of Awards

The Fellowships are for a period of 9 to 12 months.

NB Advance permission from the Leverhulme Trust must be requested and given to allow any Fellow to travel abroad during tenure of the Fellowship for a period over and above 7 days.

If a Fellow needs to leave the UK before the end of the agreed period, the host institution must inform the Leverhulme Trust immediately in writing. The balance of funds advances, pro rata, will be returnable to the Trust.
