The objective of the Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning is to help shape teaching and learning across the University and disseminate, embed and raise the profile of new approaches and successful innovation. It aims to promote student engagement wherever possible. Its focus is
- Academic literacy
- Engagement with global culture
- Interdisciplinary activity
- Performance-based learning
- Research-led teaching
Your application should specify the ways in which you will address some or all of these strands of interest.
You should explain how the outcomes of your project will be disseminated within and beyond your department and how they will impact on teaching and learning in your department. All projects require an academic mentor.
1. Research grants
These are available to undergraduate and taught postgraduate students only. You may apply for up to £1000 for your project, although we welcome applications for smaller sums. £6,120 is available in 2011/12. Please note that we cannot fund projects which involve work which will submitted for assessment for credit; if funding is awarded to you, you will be asked to sign a form confirming that you will not be submitting your project work for assessment.
Grants may be used for the following:
- Costs associated with any travel which will be required for the project;
- Attendance at academic conferences relevant to the project;
- Costs associated with dissemination activities, e.g. printing, postage.
Grants may not normally be used for:
- Costs associated with writing a dissertation;
- Internships or work experience;
- Payment for time spent on the project.

You are expected to finish your project by the end of the same academic year in which you receive the award, i.e. by the end of August. You will be expected to submit a final project report in the autumn term following completion of the project: this should be suitable for publication on the IATL web site. It should be approximately 1500 to 2000 words in length; alternatively, the report could take the form of a video or podcast.
2. Performance grants
These are available to both postgraduate and undergraduate students. You may apply for up to £200 for your performance project which must cover any technical costs, e.g. guidance from an approved theatre technician. £1020 is available in 2011/2. Rehearsal and performance space in the CAPITAL Studio at Millburn House is provided.
Grants may be used for the following:
- Creating a public performance;
- Developing a script through workshops and rehearsed readings;
- Technical assistance; costumes, props, sets; publicity required to support the performance element.
Grants may not normally be used for:
- Theatre tickets;
- Internships or work experience;
- Payment for time spent on the project.
Deadlines for applications in 2011/12 are 12 noon on:
- Tuesday 21 June 2011 for slots in Term 1 (Autumn Term)
- Friday 9 December 2011 for slots in Term 2 (Spring Term)
- Friday 16 March 2012 for slots in Term 3 (Summer Term)
- Thursday 21 June 2012 for slots in Term 1 (Autumn Term) of 2012-2013
You are expected to submit a final project report in the term following completion of the project suitable for publication on the IATL web site. This can take the form of a video of your performance, podcast, learning materials, written report of 1500-2000 words or web pages.
Application and selection procedure
Each bid will be considered by a selection panel which includes senior staff from IATL and student representation.
Applicants should submit a completed application form, both electronically and in hard copy, ensuring that all the required signatures are included.
Assessment criteria
We will assess applications using the following criteria:
Timescale: Is a detailed description of activity over the course of the project offered, with project ‘milestones’ noted, such as the planned dates of key events, travel, performances, and/or workshops?
Aims, Approaches and Activities: Are these clear and realistic? Is the design and method appropriate to the aims? Are research questions (if any) clearly framed? Are the planned activities detailed, including mention of other people to be involved? Is the project grounded in any of the existing relevant literature?
Outcomes and Dissemination: Are project outcomes clear, with appropriate plans for sharing and embedding insights learned? How are project insights to be shared within the institution and to the disciplinary community? Internal and external workshops, conference presentations, web-resources, publications?
Budget: Is a realistic and fully-costed budget provided?
Compatibility with IATL’s aims: To what degree does the project meet IATL’s working principles?
Payment of grant
Once a project has been approved for funding, a cheque for 80% of the total will be made available to the applicant. The final 20% will be released on submission of a satisfactory final project report and a statement of expenditure supported by receipts.
Successful applicants will be expected to provide a photograph and a brief abstract of their project for the IATL website.
