Economics has a long and distinguished history at Nottingham, and Nottingham School of Economics ranks among the very best in the country.

Its research training programme is designed to equip students to compete successfully and internationally at a high level, either as academics or professional economists in key organisations such as central banks and government departments.

Supervision is offered across most of Economics, with particular research areas in:

Development economics Financial and monetary economics Policy evaluation

Nottingham’s School of Economics has seven major research centres:

Many of these Centres are interdisciplinary, with internal and external research associates. PhD students have two supervisors and supervision meetings are held approximately fortnightly. Students are encouraged to attend conferences, for which funding is available.

Please Note:

Prospective students wishing to apply for funding under the Economics pathway at Nottingham will need to be currently undertaking the MRes Programme, which precedes the PhD research programme in Economics and is a compulsory part of the Economics PhD offering at the University of Nottingham. Where a student has completed an MRes elsewhere, incoming students may request a waiver for direct entry to the PhD.
