WMS Award for Teaching Excellence

Richard Tunstall receiving his award from Neil Johnson, Pro-Dean (Education)We make a number of awards at our graduation lunch reception each year to celebrate the achievements of our students. It is also a great opportunity to celebrate our staff. Ahead of the prizegiving which will take place on 17 July 2014 after the graduation ceremony, we are delighted to announce that this year’s Award for Teaching Excellence has gone to Richard Tunstall.

He is unable to attend the ceremony as he will be in Grenada with our first year MB ChB students on a clinical anatomy and dissection master class and so received the award from Neil Johnson last week. Neil said, “A huge congratulations to Richard, this is a fantastic achievement. It’s always good to receive nominations, however it’s particularly impressive that Richard has received this award in only his second year of eligibility and so he has clearly made an excellent impression on our students.”

For those of you who don’t know Richard, he leads on the teaching of anatomy. He has done a huge amount to help students understand what can be a complicated topic.

Students were asked to nominate and vote for the staff member who demonstrated really good teaching by:

  • Stimulating and inspiring learning
  • Imaginative use of resources
  • Recognising the diversity of learner needs
  • Contributing to wider initiatives to facilitate student learning

Richard said “It’s a real honour that Phase 1 students across 2 years value the quality and range of my teaching and learning resources, especially given the high level of teaching quality across the MB ChB programme.”
