The Clinical Sciences Building: new research facilities

    • Current laboratory research by staff in the Clinical Sciences Research Institute is conducted within the Biomedical Research Institute adjacent to the Warwick Medical School on the Gibbet Hill Campus of Warwick University. From February 2004, Clinical Sciences Research will also take place in a new purpose-built Clinical Sciences Building (CSB) on the site of the major regional University Hospital at Walsgrave.
    • The CSB is key to the Research Strategy of Warwick University and its Medical School. The CSB will provide internationally competitive facilities for functional genomics, proteomics and imaging research. These facilities will have HEFCE, NHS R&D and grant-funded senior research support staff. DNA analysers will provide mutation analysis for regional and national research programmes addressing monogenic and polygenic mechanisms for disease and permit study of mechanisms for cytokine-mediated development of vascular disease and other modes of pathogenesis.
    • Biochemical analysis will include tandem mass spectrometry to identify peptides within separated protein digests from cells derived from FACS analysis, explants, cell culture or laser dissection microscopy. These facilities will complement regional NHS research strategy, will support National Service Framework and Research Council goals for reducing the national burden of coronary heart disease.

Recent Thesis topics supervised by CSRI staff include:

    • Effects of oxidant stress on conduit artery function
    • The microcirculation in health and in cardiovascular disease
    • The capillary microcirculation and cardiovascular risk
    • Acute effects of raised glucose on vascular function
    • Oxidant stress and ageing
    • Review of Quality Assurance Procedure in Selected UK Hospitals and Preparation of TQM Model for Less-developed Countries
    • Minimum Data Requirements for Implementing Resource Management
    • Parents' Views of Medical Reports on Children with Special Educational Needs
    • Cerebral Palsy in Maltese Children
    • The Impact of HIB Conjugate Vaccine on the Epidemiology of Invasive Haemophilus Influenzae Disease in the West Midlands
    • Defensive Behaviours toward Knowledge-Sharing
    • The National Health Care Quality Improvement Programme for teaching hospitals in Pakistan
