PROSPER: PRevention Of Shoulder ProblEms TRial

PROSPER was a multi-centre, randomised controlled trial of usual care (written information leaflets) versus a physiotherapist-led exercise programme for women at high risk of developing shoulder problems after their breast cancer treatment. The study randomised 392 women to either exercise or usual care and followed them for one year to assess their arm function, pain and quality of life. We also completed qualitative interviews with ladies in the trial and with NHS physiotherapists delivering the exercise programme.

The trial is now finished. You can read the scientific results in the British Medical Journal here: https://www.bmj.com/content/375/bmj-2021-066542

If you are a physiotherapist interested in learning more or completing training in the PROSPER exercise programme, please register (for free) with FutureLearn: https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/prevention-of-shoulder-problems-prosper-programme

An audio recording of PROSPER study findings is available from: https://acaudio.com/publication/896

We extend a huge thanks to all patients and NHS staff who took part in the study.

The PROSPER Trial has finished recruitment with 392 patients recruited
