Haemorrhage during pregnancy (including miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy)

Guideline Summary

Haemorrhage during pregnancy is broadly divided into two types, haemorrhage occurring in early pregnancy such as miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy or ruptured ectopic pregnancy and haemorrhage occurring in late pregnancy such as placenta praevia and placental abruption. Haemorrhage may be revealed with evident vaginal loss of blood, for example, miscarriage and placenta praevia or concealed where bleeding occurs within the abdomen or uterus.

This guideline provides guidance for paramedics1 for the assessment and management of haemorrhage during pregnancy, including, bleeding during early and late pregnancy, including, miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy.

1The principles will be applicable to all pre-hospital clinicians.
