Clinical Systems Improvement - Studying how to provide better safer healthcare by improvement of processes, leadership, knowledge transfer and systems design, with a particular emphasis on lessons learnt from public and private sectors outside health

Undergraduate: Clinical Systems Improvement

There is a need for patient safety and service improvement to be given greater focus within undergraduate curricular for all professionals to improve the quality of care.  This includes improving safety as well as delivery proven care in a consistent & reliable way.

This project, phase 2, is a continuation of phase 1 where an undergraduate course in service improvement was developed and tested; “Better safer healthcare” for undergraduate health students. We will be particularly reporting on interviews with phase 1 students who participated in the course to explore the impact of what they have learned and the difficulties they have experienced if they have tried to utilise their new skills.

Interviews will also be done with hospital staff involved in phase 1 exploring their views on an undergraduate training package for improvement in terms of existing capacity and receptiveness.

We will also be examining present undergraduate curricula and proposing a combined undergraduate curriculum on patient safety and service improvement.
