BACKGROUND
CLINICAL SYSTEMS IMPROVEMENT:
Matthew leads the Clinical Systems Improvement group who teach and research on systems thinking to improve quality and safety of care. This uses learning from other sectors and includes approaches such as lean thinking, six sigma, systems reliability and human factors. His particular interest ins in developing evidence based improvement and system design to improve patient safety.

HEALTH STRATEGY:
Matthew was the Dept of Health advisor in emergency medicine until 2007 and was recently the regional; clinical lead for the Darzi Review of the NHS. He has also worked with the National Audit Office, prime Ministers Delivery Unit and the Healthcare Commission. He has also advised overseas governments on organisation of emergency care. He continues to work with a variety of regional, national and international bodies on systems design, patient safety and emergency care. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EMERGENCY CARE:
Work covers guidelines in emergency care (including directing the national coordinating centre for UK ambulance clinical guidelines and the National Library for Health emergency care library) and clinical trials in emergency care (in soft tissue injury and resuscitation). He has particular interest in research on reducing waiting times in emergency departments and prioritisation systems in ambulance services and end of life care in urgent care.
Matthew also continues his clinical commitment at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust as an emergency medicine consultant.
