    BACKGROUND

Matthew is the National Clinical Director for Urgent and Emergency Care at the Department of Health. His recent work has included developing national quality indicators. He was previously regional clinical lead for the Darzi Review of the NHS. He has also worked with the National Audit Office, Prime Ministers Delivery Unit and the Healthcare Commission. He has also advised overseas governments on organisation of emergency care. Matthew leads the CLINICAL SYSTEMS IMPROVEMENT group who teach and research on systems thinking to improve quality and safety of care. This uses learning from other sectors and includes approaches such as lean thinking, six sigma, systems reliability and human factors. His particular interest is in developing evidence based improvement and system design to improve patient safety. In EMERGENCY CARE he directs the national coordinating centre for UK ambulance clinical guidelines and is involved in clinical trials in emergency care (in soft tissue injury and resuscitation). He has particular interest in research on reducing waiting times in emergency departments, safer clinical systems and prioritisation systems in ambulance services and end of life care in urgent care. Matthew also continues his clinical commitment at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust as an emergency medicine consultant.
