Areas of research interests include inequalities in health, mens health, poverty and smoking. My doctoral research is in the area of men's health and I have been a grant holder on projects that have explored fathers' knowledge and beliefs around smoking and new fathers' experiences around maternity services.

My research has three main areas of interest; inequalities in health, masculinity and health and masculinity and fatherhood. My research has examined on-going debates between neo-materialist and psychosocial explanations for current patterns of health from a gendered perspective. Much of this work has sought to examine the intersections of social class and masculinity for understanding current patterns of working class male health and working class mens use of healthcare services. I have also explored the experiences of first time fathers regarding childbirth and the views of health professionals working in this field. This work has highlighted the ways in which masculinity positions and is used to position men within this arena. In addition, I am interested in the intersections between masculine and fathering identities and have carried out research among a group of men who attended a parenting programme. My current grant, from the ESRC, is funding a project which is examining mens experiences of infertility and infertility treatment and is also interested in the views and experiences of health professionals working in the field of assisted reproduction.
