Background

John Hall is a clinical director of the postgraduate programmes at Warwick University and is also an Associate Professor. He established a 6 surgery dental practice with 4 dentists and 3 dental hygienists. The practice is now used as one of the regional training centres for dental implantology.

He has been committed to postgraduate dental education since qualifying and was a founder member of the Faculty of Dental Practitioners. He has organised many post graduate courses and was an Adviser in Vocational Training for the University of Birmingham for 12 years. He was a Consultant Clinical Assessor for BUPA DentalCover and was also a member on the Denplan Dental Advisor Panel.

John has lectured widely throughout the UK. He has also lectured in India, Malaysia and Singapore. The subjects include the following:

  • Clinical Governance
  • Clinical audit
  • Occlusion
  • TMD
  • Crown and bridge work
  • Critical Reading
  • Assessment of the MFGDP
  • Treatment planning

He also has run many hands on courses in the UK. These courses are on the following topics:

  • Making occlusal splints
  • Crown and bridge work
  • International Qualifying Examination (IQE)
    In 2002 he was invited to the institute at Manipal to run a course on the MFGDP(UK). As a result many candidates have now been successful in obtaining MFGDP(UK) and are now involved in taking the other parts of the examination.

    He has been an advisor to the Centre for Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education in two research projects:

    • Personal Development Plans for GDP’s
    • The Type Volume and Impact of Continuing Professional Development for General Dental Practitioners

      John was a co-author on the research project into the use of Evidence Based Portfolios in general dental practice. He introduced the concept of Evidence Based Portfolios into dentistry. His work has now been developed into the 7 Key Skills CD’s which he was one of the three editors and a subject matter expert on the legislation CD. 

      Finally John has great experience in examining. He has been involved in the MFGDP(UK) exam since its inception. As part of that role he was Chief Examiner of the MFGDP for 8 years.
